The starting point
How can inventory insights lead to clear decisions, supported by the right tools?
A global life-sciences group set out to connect pharmaceutical supply chain planning with Finance and Commercial. Inventory teams needed a consistent way to identify excess stock, evaluate planning parameters and follow up on decisions. A fragmented tool landscape also needed to be assessed against the future planning processes.
A stock alert is only useful if someone can interpret it and decide what to do. An order may be difficult to change because of production campaigns, goods already in transit, supplier arrangements or changing demand. The steering model therefore connects the alert with its cause, the responsible role and the next review. The tool landscape needs to support that same decision process.
Our contribution
PROVADIT’s contribution
PROVADIT took responsibility for design and delivery in two defined areas: inventory steering and the supporting planning-tool landscape. The team identified, transformed and prepared global supply chain data, evaluated inventory quantities and optimization opportunities, and connected steering rules with dashboards, review processes and a target IT landscape.
Turn inventory data into decisions
Design and maintain interim tools for order review and inventory analysis. Connect stock coverage, safety-stock and lot-size parameters with overstock alerts. Establish how planners review an alert, document its cause and evaluate whether an order can be postponed, reduced or canceled.
Align tools with planning processes
Assess the existing planning tools, compare their capabilities with process requirements and define the target landscape. Determine which tools to retain, upgrade, consolidate, replace or retire. Map how they support integrated supply chain planning and short-term operational coordination, including the alignment of demand, supply and financial goals.
Prepare ownership and adoption
Run and support regular inventory reviews, define responsibilities and design the tool-activation approach. Set out a staged transition from centrally supported interim tools toward decentralized planning-team ownership and integration with OMP and connected systems. The roadmap brings tool introduction, user enablement and handover into a shared plan.
Inside the work
Steering logic and IT architecture, designed together.
Two connected areas of work address the same planning problem. Interim tools support current decisions while a defined target landscape guides the transition.
Recognize and explain
Inventory views and parameter checks distinguish an actionable excess-stock signal from data or planning issues.
Decide and follow up
Defined reviews and responsibilities connect order decisions with documented reasons and follow-up.
Align and transition
The tool assessment informs what to retain, improve, consolidate or retire. The roadmap sets out adoption and future platform integration.
Deliverables
The work delivered. The decisions it supports.
The work delivered an inventory-steering framework and an assessed target landscape for planning tools. It also established a route toward greater responsibility within planning teams. The target architecture and transition roadmap describe the intended direction; completion of every planned rollout or retirement is not asserted.
- An inventory-steering framework combining interim tools, parameter checks, alert handling and recurring reviews.
- An assessment of the planning-tool landscape, a target architecture and a strategy for consolidation and retirement.
- Tool maps, an adoption model and a staged roadmap toward planning-team ownership and platform integration.
Engagement context
This case covers PROVADIT’s inventory-steering and planning-tool work within a broader client-led transformation. It describes the analysis, design and transition roadmap within that scope, without attributing the entire program or its financial outcomes to PROVADIT.
What this illustrates
Inventory optimization depends on more than identifying excess stock. Teams need usable information, explicit decision rules and tools that support their responsibilities. Designing these elements together connects the planning process with the IT decisions behind it.
