Inventory Modeling and Scenario Planning
PROVADIT designed and built a forward-looking inventory model and a cockpit data interface for a global life-sciences group. The work connected planning parameters, inventory drivers and comparable scenarios for pharmaceutical planning.

The starting point
What inventory should the business hold, given its planning assumptions?
A pharmaceutical supply chain initiative sought to modernize tactical inventory planning across global, country and site teams. The previous approach started from actual stock. A new parameter-based model was needed to explain the inventory implied by demand, safety stocks, lead times and order quantities, and to compare that baseline with the inventory actually held.
Actual stock records the consequences of earlier decisions. It does not, by itself, explain what the business needs for a future planning period. The model introduced a second reference point: the inventory implied by explicit planning assumptions. Comparing the two supports a more focused discussion of excess stock and its causes.
Our contribution
PROVADIT’s contribution
PROVADIT designed and built the forward-looking inventory model and the data interface supplying its results to the inventory-steering cockpit. The responsibility covered parameter logic, model implementation and scenarios using existing, improved or user-defined assumptions. The interface made these baselines, planned special effects and indicators available for downstream targeting, alerting and scenario analysis.
Explain the inventory drivers
Break the baseline into safety stock, goods-issue stock, goods-receipt or quality stock, transportation stock and cycle stock. Connect each component to the relevant planning data so a change in a parameter has an understandable effect on the modeled inventory.
Compare planning assumptions
Provide baselines for current parameters, improved parameters and user-defined scenarios. Include planned special effects, such as launches or disruptions, as a separate extension of the baseline. The documented operating model used weekly planning-data snapshots.
Connect the model to steering
Build the data-provision interface into the inventory-steering cockpit. Supply the model results and indicators used for comparing actual and modeled stock, identifying excess, setting targets and examining scenarios.
Inside the work
What sits behind an inventory target?
The baseline separates the planning drivers so that teams can discuss the underlying assumptions. This is a simplified explanation of the model, not a client-system diagram.
Safety stock
The buffer maintained in the planning system or explicitly supplied to the model.
Goods-issue stock
Demand, goods-issue lead times and warehouse information inform this component.
Goods-receipt and quality stock
Demand and goods-receipt timing account for stock awaiting availability.
Transportation stock
Transport lanes and logistics logic represent inventory moving through the network.
Cycle stock
Lot sizes and planning rules explain the stock associated with replenishment cycles.
Deliverables
The work delivered. The decisions it supports.
The delivered model made the assumptions behind inventory visible and supplied a consistent baseline to downstream steering. It supports comparisons and decisions; it is not a guarantee that modeled reductions can be realized without operational constraints.
- A forward-looking inventory baseline with explicit planning drivers.
- Comparable scenarios for current, improved and user-defined parameters, with planned special effects.
- A data interface delivering the model results into the inventory-steering cockpit.
Engagement context
PROVADIT delivered the model and its data interface. The cockpit’s user interface, the wider optimization platform and the parameter-review tool were neighboring parts of the initiative. Later use is documented for 2024–2025; this case does not assert continuing project delivery today.
What this illustrates
A useful inventory target has an explanation behind it. Modeling the planning drivers gives teams a basis for discussing why stock exists, which assumptions should change and what those changes would mean.
